From the series “curiosities from the world of coffee”, here is one made in Tokyo, a city where the cult of tradition and disruptive innovation find the perfect coexistence.
The person we want to talk to you about is Katsuyuki Tanaka, barista and owner of Bear Pond Espresso in the aforementioned city.
Tanaka’s intent was to create something that would remain in the memory as a new sensory experience. Something that, after tasting, would become so familiar that you would feel the need and joy of sharing.
We are talking about the most original and innovative coffee bar on the market: the Coffeedust Bar Experience.
What makes this bar different from all the others on the market?
Think about it: there are chocolate bars and hot chocolate to drink, but are there espresso bars and coffee bars? No, there are coffee-flavoured bars. It’s a different matter when the ingredient that should be the main one is relegated to the role of flavour.
In contrast, Tanaka’s products are created exclusively with the same ingredients as his espresso: coffee beans, water, milk and a little sugar.
Basically, a solid coffee.
Tanaka had always been a pioneer, even at first his espresso did not appeal to the palates accustomed to blends but eventually he created a cult following of the black drink and, in the end, his Bear Pond Expresso became known for having led the modern coffee culture in Japan. (He also appeared in the 2014 documentary A Film About Coffee.)
Each bar contains 50 mg of caffeine, which is about half of a regular cup of coffee, but the caffeine level, as well as the flavour, can be customized using different types of coffee beans and can be a good alternative to the classic “cup”.
Tanaka’s statement: “Through the project I met many new people who didn’t know the taste of my coffee. I felt frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t let them taste my cup on the spot. So I decided to create portable and solid coffee shops that I could take out of my pocket like business cards and let them taste my idea of coffee”.
It’s a beautiful idea that comes from the legitimate and noble concept of making your goodness known, exalting and spreading your qualities.
