The time dedicated to predicting the future is approaching.
As in every respectable end of the year, horoscopes, tarot cards, sibyls and numerology are called into question with the hope that upcoming events are ready to smile upon us.
This year we can try caffeomancy.
Like coffee, caffeomancy is a form of divination of Arab origin that is performed by reading coffee grounds.
It is part of tasseomancy and is a practice that spread during the period of maximum expansion of the Ottoman Empire, first in the Balkans and subsequently in Europe at the end of the 17th century following the Ottoman military campaigns.
Each method of divination has its own peculiarities and coffee divination interprets the figures that form inside and outside the cup with the coffee grounds. The symbols are the key to interpretation. The figures drawn inside the cup represent the future, while the residues that slipped onto the saucer represent the current situation.
For a correct reading it is best not to move the plate as the position in which the figures appear has a fundamental aspect for divination.
If you want to try, remember that the person performing the divination must concentrate well before rotating the cup between their hands to try to interpret the signs consolidated on the inside walls of the cup.
Below, a small handbook and a dictionary of symbols from A to Z.
Let’s start with coffee: the most used is “Turkish coffee”, obtained from a mixture of very fine coffee powder and water, brought to the boil in a metal saucepan. Pour the mixture into a white porcelain cup with a saucer, let it decant, cool and drink it without sugar. Drink only the liquid part of the coffee, leaving the residues of the difficult-to-swallow coffee and water mixture at the bottom of the cup.
Close the cup with the saucer upside down, resting your fingers on it and making short rotations of the cup, while you concentrate on the aspects you want to discover. When you feel ready, turn the cup and saucer upside down on the table. The cup is always left to rest upside down on the saucer until its bottom has cooled, placing a finger on it to test the heat. When it is sufficiently cold, turn it upside down and proceed.
Another type of coffee you can use is “Greek coffee,” which is obtained from a very fine blend of lightly roasted coffee. You need to dissolve 3 teaspoons of coffee in boiling water in a metal saucepan, with the addition of 2 or 3 teaspoons of sugar. Then, pour the mixture into a white porcelain cup and wait a minute for it to settle. Sugar, in addition to being a sweetener, acts as a glue for images. Concentrate and drink 3 or 4 sips, each sip a thought, of the still hot coffee, changing the position of your mouth on the cup. When you feel ready, swirl the remaining coffee in the cup. After 5 or 6 rotations, turn it upside down on a plate – without touching it – to drain the coffee. Place the cup on a paper towel and let it rest upside down until the coffee grounds have become dry and stable – about 3 minutes. During the rotating movements, some of the coffee tends to come out and settle on the outside, forming images. Start reading from the outside and then move on to the inside by tipping the cup.
The figures are divided into: positive, the light negative, the dark and dense ones.
The identification of the subject represented by the figures must be a spontaneous process and must recall to mind the image of the figure in its reality.
